What Canadian Installers Need to Know About NDAA
Security camera installers and buyers may have heard the term NDAA compliant. You may be wondering what this means. Broadly, the National Defence Authorization Act, or NDAA for short, authorizes expenditures and activities of the Department of Defense (DOD) in the United States. In 2023 the NDAA budget is over $800 Billion.
How does this relate to security cameras?
In 2018, the John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019 was passed into law. A provision of this law forbids federal agencies from purchasing or using equipment manufactured by, or having components from several Chinese companies, including Huaweii and ZTE, and from top security camera manufacturers Hikvision, Hytera and Dahua Technology. This also includes chips from Huawei subsidiary Hisilicon.
Products that are not restricted by this legislation are often referred to as NDAA-compliant. It's important to note that the NDAA ban only impacts Federal government agencies in the USA. It does not impact corporations.
What about NDAA in Canada?
The United States NDAA doesn't have any impact on Canada. Canada does have its own NDAA that relates to the functioning of the Canadian Armed Forces. But at the time of writing, Canada has not passed similar legislation that would restrict the use of equipment from any brand.
We believe in customer choice, and as such Aartech Canada offers a selection of cameras, including NDAA-compliant models.
