Smoke alarms, gas detectors and carbon monoxide alarms save lives and are required by most building codes and local bylaws. Smoke alarms should be at minimum on each floor of the home and in or near sleeping areas. Recent changes to some regions now require visual signals (strobes) to be included where smoke alarms are installed for new builds and renovations. The terms smoke detector and smoke alarm are used interchangeably.
